Do Pesticides Get Into the Flesh of Fruits and Vegetables?

Welcome to another HealthNews video news release brought to you by HealthNews.

In today’s news we look at the risk of pesticide residue on organic vs. non-organic fruits and vegetables.

If you are not buying organic, you can be sure the conventional produce you are consuming has been sprayed with pesticides.

Pesticides sprayed on fruits and vegetables accumulate on the outer peel or skin, but the skin does not form an impermeable barrier.

Some pesticides are designed to be absorbed into the tissue of the produce to protect it from pests that penetrate the skin.

Fruits like cantaloupe have a thicker peel and show low levels of pesticide residues.

Apples, on the other hand, show high levels of pesticide residue and rank fourth of the most contaminated fruits and vegetables on Environmental Working Group’s “Dirty Dozen” list, meaning they are high in pesticides.

If you buy conventional apples, the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry found washing them in a solution of baking soda and water for 15 minutes was more effective than either plain water or a bleach solution at removing pesticide residues.

Even then, washing does not remove pesticide residues that had penetrated deep into the peel or through the peel to the flesh of the fruit.

Peeling might be effective, but involves a loss of the nutrients in the skin.

The solution to the pesticide problem is to buy local organic fruits and vegetables.
