Smart schools for a society of trust

Andreas Schleicher, the Director for Education for the OECD, recently presented in Paris an excellent guideline about the challenges for our schools. In this time of the COVID-19 pandemic, schools will play a central role in the future of society. They will need to be real collaborative spaces where teachers and students share a common strategy towards knowledge and creativity as the key drivers of growth and competitiveness.

ICT and modern content matrixes give the old format of schools a new frontier that helps students answer, with more efficiency, the demanding and complex challenges of the new, post-virus society. This new form for school is the right platform for making strategic education the central competence for a new order in society.

This is the time for real and effective smart schools. A smart school will allow people to know who they are and have a strong commitment with the values of freedom, social justice and development. This is the reason to believe that a new standard for society is more than a possibility, it is an individual and collective necessity for all of us.

The smart school will be an open space where collaboration and participation are the drivers of a new form of communication. In this way it´s essential to learn the lessons that, more than ever, emerge from a world that is trying to rebuild its competitive advantage and to reinvent its effective place in a complex and global network of relations. In this time of recovery and reconnection, people and companies have a central role to play towards a new attitude that is connected with the creation of value and a focus on creativity.

This new smart school will be a permanent commitment between a local and global way of thinking.  It must confirm itself as an enabler in a very demanding world, by introducing into society and the economy a capital of trust and innovation that is essential to ensure a central leadership in all future relations between the different social and economic players. These new actors should be more global, capable of driving the social matrix, promoting a unique dynamic of knowledge building, and selling it as a mobile asset on the global market.

The school will be also an effective actor of permanent social integration and it must know how to integrate, in a positive way, most of the citizens that want to develop new ideas. Social cohesion is done with the constructive participation of citizens as it is increasingly necessary to have an effective attitude towards the mobilization of this effort. A positive integrative policy is a signal that the different actors have a common road to follow in the future.

Smart schools will face very exciting challenges due to the fact that they will be effectively constructed by all the actors in a free and collaborative strategic interaction. Smart schools will be the answer for teachers and students who have an active commitment to focusing on the participation and development of new competences on a collaborative basis.
