Germany’s Economy Minister Altmaier enters quarantine

German Federal Minister of Economics Peter Altmaier is now self-isolating, after he learned that an aide of another EU minister, had tested positive for COVID-19.

Altmaier, who hosted in Berlin a meeting of the bloc’s trade ministers on Monday, said in a Twitter post: “This afternoon I learned that an employee of an EU minister present at the Council of Trade Ministers in Berlin had tested positive for Corona.”

“As a precautionary measure, I went to quarantine at home,” he also wrote. According to his twitter post, the first test he took was negative and he is “doing very well.”

Altmaier is the second cabinet member to go into self-isolation, as the country’s Foreign Minister, Heiko Maas also said the same day he would self-isolate, after learning that a member of his security staff had contracted the virus.

Maas was in Brussels on Monday, for the Foreign Affairs Council (FAC), along with the EU27 foreign ministers. His first test since learning of this was negative.

Earlier this week, EU Council President, Charles Michel decided to postpone an extraordinary summit on the Eastern Mediterranean, set to be held on September 24 and 25, after he learned that one of his security guards had tested positive for the virus. Under Belgian Coronavirus guidelines, Michel went into self-isolation.
