U.S. President Donald Trump said on Monday that a vaccine for the novel coronavirus would be available within the year, adding that it could be ready “far in advance of the end of the year.”
Trump said the U.S. was “mass producing the most promising candidates” in advance of their having been found to be effective, to be ready to distribute immediately upon approval and said the military is on standby to help with distribution.
He said that politics would not interfere with the approval of a vaccine, or its distribution across the U.S.
“It’s possible that I get involved,” he said, adding “we want to make people better. We want to send them to the areas that most need it.”
Trump also addressed a social media post he made Monday criticizing White House coronavirus task force coordinator Dr. Deborah Birx for “taking the bait” from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. He said he believes the U.S. is “doing very well” in its efforts to rein in the coronavirus and that she should have said so in an interview with CNN’s Dana Bash.
